Career After XII

Fashion Technology & Design

Till the 1980s, fashion was the bastion of the rich and famous. It was the 1990s that brought fashion into the middle-class home. This led to a huge spurt in opening of thousands of home boutiques and thereafter their dreams of becoming a fashion designer a la Ritu Beri. Today, every other person aspires to wear the 'labelled' designer clothes, shoes and accessories. This has resulted in generating a huge demand for the designers, not just for clothes but also for accessories, furnishings, home decorations and so on.

Courses such as Fashion Designing, Gems & Jewellery Designing, and Footwear Designing, etc. have therefore become HOT careers. Institutes such as NIFT with centres at New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Gandhinagar & Chennai, NID, Ahmedabad, JDTI, Delhi and Pearl Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi are offering courses in these areas.

After graduating from these courses, one can start working with an already established designer or can also start on one's own.

Admission Process

One can embark on any of these careers immediately after Class 12. The admission process to most of these courses is through an entrance exam, which is then followed by a Group Discussion ( GD ) and a Personal Interview ( PI ). Some universities like GGSIPU take admissions only on the basis of the written test.

Most of these exams test students on various areas of learning such as

1. Mathematical Ability
2. English Usage & Verbal Reasoning
3. Logical Reasoning
4. General Knowledge

The exams are objective type having around 150-200 multiple-choice questions to be answered within a time limit of two and a half hours to three hours. The syllabus for these exams is Class 10 level with some BCA entrance exams having a special test area on Higher Maths incorporated in the exam. Current affairs and basic general knowledge are tested in each exam. The Hotel management tests also have a section on scientific aptitude where questions from physics, chemistry and biology are also asked from the aspirant.

Each of these exams is a test of knowledge coupled with speed & accuracy as all these exams have around 150 plus questions which are expected to be answered in close to two hours, which is not easy. So, the exams also test your ability to select the right kind of questions which could be answered quickly and correctly in as short a time as possible. Quite a few exams also have negative marking for wrong answers and therefore accuracy becomes critical.

Specific courses would also have additional tests that are specific to judge your aptitude in that particular area. For example, entrance exam for Fashion Technology may have an extra test to judge your design ability & innovation, e.g., Creative Ability Test ( CAT ) conducted by NIFT.

The second phase of some of these exams could be the GD & interview process where the student's knowledge, his ability to think on his feet and also his ability to work in a team are tested. Many institutes do not conduct GD/interview and admission is based only on the performance in the written test.
